Last week, Adobe hosted a “virtual” launch party for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I was invited to attend in person at Adobe’s Minnesota offices in Shoreview, MN. As you can see, the weather was very, uh, Minnesotan. Listed in the story are Lightroom Resource URLs as well as links to movies of the Lightroom “Virtual” Launch Party.

George and I arrive at about 8:00 am to go through the script for the party.

We go into the main conference room, Frostbite Falls.

George gets ready to go live at noon, Central time.

Melissa had decorated the room with bunting and a box of Lightroom.

This is the “small box” of Lightroom intended for sales at non-computer stores such as Walmart.

Engineer & bunting shot.

George starts the event by explaining the agenda for the party . Then we switched to the San Jose office for introductions from the West Coast team.

Lightroom “founder” Mark Hamburg

The rest of the MN team line up for their intros.

Cool “Shadowland” team t-shirts (I want one).

Troy Gaul the #2 engineer on Lightroom.

Melissa was in charge of tech in the MN office including sound & video. Everything ran from her laptop and the conference room controls.

I ran through the History of Lightroom with Mark Hamburg–trying to get a word in edgewise.

George ran through “Engineer Features” with engineers talking about features they worked on.

First up on the VIP Customer presentations was our Lightroom in Antarctica video and a slideshow with Seth Resnick and myself talking about our photo shoot in Antarctica with Michael Reichmann of The Luminous Landscape.

George has a funny look on his face when I talked about “getting a shot” (literally) because of a seal bite.

We ran a video that was shot on the day Lightroom was released, Feb 19th, 2007. If you’d like to see the video and a Lightroom Slideshow of images shot that day, check out my web site at: http://schewephoto.com/Icebergs/. Seth Resnick also has a page up at: http://sethresnick.com/antarctic2007/index.html

Mikkel Aaland introduced the story about the Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop Adventure in Iceland.

Mikkel and Derrick Story showed slides from the shoot including several by George Jardine. Mikkel has selected one of George’s to be on the cover.

Next up was a video from Scott Kelby who was teaching a workshop about Lightroom during a Digital Landscape photo workshop in Yosemite.

Next, Julieanne Kost talked about Project: Photoshop Lightroom a new initiative started in the Fall 2006 bringing world-class photographer Colin Finlay and Photoshop Lightroom to 25 schools across the US.

At the end of the event, a list of Lightroom Resource URLs was put up.

Both teams wished Jennifer Stern a happy birthday (as well as congratulating each other for shipping).

George signs off.

I run up and hold up a Lightroom box for the camera.

Then, it was celebration time. I brought a bottle of 2001 Seghesio VENOM.

Well, the MN office didn’t have any wine glasses so George and I used plastic tumblers. Anybody who knows George knows he HATED that (but the wine was good anyway).

Nothing but the best for us…local pizza for lunch.

A pirate pinata (we didn’t break it) made in honor of Lightroom’s “Pirate Mode”. Oh, you don’t know about Pirate Mode? Well, that’s for another story.

At the end of the day, George and I head out for the hotel and dinner in the middle of Minnesota’s worst snow storm in a couple of years.

But, it was kinda pretty…

An End User’s Champion, Fraser’s Contributions to the Digital Imaging and Desktop Color Industry will be Celebrated in an Upbeat, Inspirational Multimedia Event on January 10

Press Release: January 2, 2007 – San Francisco – Visual arts connoisseur, proud and humorous Scotsman, masterful musician, tireless digital imaging scientist and author, and peaceful Buddhist with more than a passing fancy for astronomy — Bruce Fraser was a renaissance man whose most outstanding characteristic was his humanity.

In recognition of Bruce’s profound impact on shaping the development of digital imaging and color management products and educating the hundreds of thousands of people who depend on these products in their daily work, Macworld Conference and Expo, the digital imaging and color management industry’s leading vendors, and famed publishing house Peachpit Press are pleased to invite all conference attendees, exhibitors and other interested friends, colleagues and fans to a gala tribute to the legendary consultant, author and lecturer Fraser, who passed away December 16. The tribute will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2007 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm; at Moscone Center in room 134, North Hall.

Hosted by internationally renowned musician and photographer Graham Nash, the program will include a Who’s Who array of imaging luminaries and digital photography superstars who will share entertaining and inspiring not-to-be-missed “insider” tales of Bruce’s colorful life plus accolades from the A-List of manufacturers whose products are forever improved by Bruce’s guidance. The ultimate champion of the “end-user” and clarity in software design, the program will culminate in a rousing, raised-glass Scottish toast featuring Fraser’s favorite Single-Malt Scotch in a heart-felt farewell to a beloved industry legend. (NOTE: Attendees must be at least 21 years of age to drink any alcoholic beverage in the State of California.)

In the world of digital color and imaging, few can claim the myriad contributions to product innovation, development and end user education that belong to Bruce Fraser.

Beyond making major contributions to digital imaging, Bruce Fraser has consistently shared his passion and skill with unmatched generosity and grace. He is a beautiful man with a huge heart.
— Michael Kieran, President, RoboCatalog, Inc.

The coauthor of the best-selling Real World series of books about Adobe Photoshop and the definitive works Real World Color Management, and the author or Real World Camera Raw, and his recently published Real World Image Sharpening, Bruce has enlightened end users and experts worldwide on the intricacies of color publishing and imaging through his many lectures, product reviews and magazine columns. He is the expert’s expert and has collaborated with virtually every manufacturer and developer of color imaging products from the earliest days (including Adobe Systems, Inc., Apple Computer, Inc., Epson America, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Microsoft Corporation, and X-Rite Inc.), helping shape for over twenty years the powerful tools on which so many depend today.

Bruce moved our industry forward, and he did so in a most engaging way. He loved life and he loved his work. His life interrupted much too soon, Bruce’s passionate and generous spirit will always be with us.
— Henry Wilhelm, President, Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc.

Bruce Fraser was an industry treasure. In his public persona, he was a gifted author and teacher with infinite generosity and patience with a rare knack of mixing knowledge with humor. His treatment of a dry technical document could make it entertaining and all the more valuable because of that.

The private side of Bruce was equally remarkable. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes with companies to ensure that technology was implemented in a manner that real world users could actually use.
—Jeff Schewe, Partner, Pixel Genius LLC

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Bruce became one of the world’s leading authorities on color and digital imaging. During his career Bruce has written hundreds of magazine articles. His amazing insights have made him a much sought-after speaker and consultant on image reproduction, color correction, and color management throughout the world. During his celebrated career, Bruce has written for Photoshop User, MacWeek and MacUser magazines, as well as penning the popular “Out of Gamut” column for CreativePro.com.

Bruce wielded enormous influence in the evolution of digital color management, and has become an industry legend by teaching color and effective means for its use in digital workflow. Since the early years, he has played an important consulting role in the development of Adobe Photoshop, including during that programs’ earliest incarnation when it was known as BarneyScan XP. He contributed to the introduction of the very first spectrophotometer targeting the desktop world – the COLORTRON – a product that pointed the way to current instruments deemed essential to successful color reproduction from the desktop.

In December 2002, he partnered with five other industry experts to form Pixel Genius LLC – a company dedicated to creating leading-edge products and services for the photographic and digital imaging industries.

On December 15, the day before his passing, Bruce received the first National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005, Bruce was also recognized at Photoshop World when he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.

Far from a typical memorial, An Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser will be a lively and engaging recollection of how digital imaging and desktop color has evolved over more than 20 years to become the everyday phenomenon it is. Filled with striking still visuals, video clips and told by the geeks and non-geeks who knew Bruce along the way (including famed landscape photographer and digital pioneer Stephen Johnson; Bill Atkinson, Apple Fellow and now a photographer himself; renowned celebrity photographer Greg Gorman and Adobe Photoshop engineers and friends Thomas Knoll and Mark Hamburg to name but a few), An Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser will give attendees a vivid, inside look at how one dedicated and focused person of extraordinary humility could shape an industry, from billion dollar manufacturers to home-based photo enthusiasts.

Some of our visitors to PhotoshopNews may already be aware that Bruce Fraser, noted author, lecturer and “color geek”, was diagnosed several months ago with terminal lung cancer.

Early last month we reported from Photo Plus, New York that Bruce was too ill to attend the annual Pixel Mafia dinner. At that time Bruce was about to start a course of chemotherapy that offered an optimistic prognosis. Unfortunately, the treatment has not been successful and the cancer has since progressed. Bruce is now severely ill and it is the opinion of Bruce, his wife Angela and the doctors, that he now probably has but a very short time left. He is being cared for at home by Angela and support nursing staff.

For those who don’t know him, Bruce Fraser is an internationally well known author, consultant and speaker on the topics of digital imaging and color reproduction. In addition to authoring the highly successful Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2, he has been a contributing editor for Macworld magazine and co-author of the best-selling books Real World Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Real World Color Management, Second Edition, and the recently released Real World Image Sharpening. Bruce has also penned numerous articles, most recently for CreativePro.com. Bruce is a partner in PixelGenius, LLC. where he designed PhotoKit Sharpener.

Bruce is a humble and gentle man of rare genius and dry humor who over the years has added immensely to the collective knowledge of the digital imaging industry.

It goes without saying that this latest news has come as a great shock to those of us who have known and worked with Bruce over the years and come to love him, including his friends and colleagues in Pixel Genius. Bruce and Angela have both been very much in our thoughts and at this point in time we wanted to let the wider public know his current situation and give people a chance to write and pay tribute.

If you wish to express your sentiments to Bruce, you may do so here in the comments section under this story. We will gather them and forward them to Bruce and possibly use them in an upcoming tribute to Bruce that is being planned for Macworld on Janurary 10th, 2007. We will be posting additional information regarding the tribute to PhotoshopNews shortly.

…with a few friends for the Epson Print Academy in Salt Lake City this Saturday, November 11th. (Boy, I hope they have a Starbucks there…)

We’re coming to Salt Lake City for a special one day Epson event – check out the Epson Print Academy for details and online registration. There’s still room availalbe!

What will we be covering?
* In-depth color management and custom profiling
* Creating and optimizing a professional workflow
* Expert-level fine-art printing techniques
* Using a RIP for contract proofing and to increase productivity
* Collaborating with graphic designers and commercial printers
* Advanced black and white printing techniques

For those attendees from Phoenix be sure to check the Epson Print Academy Track Two Info page. Remember the login & password? Here’s a photo report of the Phoenix event held October 28th.

Phoenix, well actually Chandler, started off as a beautiful sunny day-perfect for spending all day in a dark room, right?

As some of you may know, it’s an Epson Print Academy tradition to start off the day with a Starbucks Mocha. Mac was kind enough to bring me one.

Well before the crowds came in, Mac, Andrew Rodney (subbing for Bruce Fraser) and I were busy finalizing the setup.

Meanwhile, out front people were queuing up at registration.

The Print Academy always comes with a Tech Expo area as well as an Epson Stylus Pro Print Gallery.

Sponsors had table areas, here’s the Microsoft rep talking about Vista.

The Pro dealer for the day was Professional Marketing Services (PMS-I think the dealer made a joke about that)

OnOne Software was there…

As well as the Adobe rep.

Free tutorials and Adobe pens were popular.

Nik Software was also there…

…as well as GTI showing their light booths.

Wacom demoed their Cintiq tablet/display.

Lexar was there…sorry, no free compact flash cards.

Coffee was served and the attendees needed it.

Jack Reznicki (left) joined the road tour taking care of Track One. Dan (AKA Dano) Steinhardt from Epson was there…the Print Academy is his baby.

People wandered around looking at the print gallery.

Then the doors were opened (and the crowd rushed the doors).

Even before we started, Mac Holbert was out front answering questions.

Outside the Track Two doors, Dano gives his watch a worried glance.

No worries Dano, we always start on time (well, within a minute or so).

One of the attendees mugging for the camera.

I watched where he sat so I could keep an eye on him.

The crowd is ready…

Andrew kicked off the morning talking about his favorite topic, Color Management.

Andrew has had to fill in for Bruce Fraser due to Bruce’s inability to travel. But Andrew does a great job (he just doesn’t have that Scottish accent).

At the break, attendees can look at prints made on the 4800 and now the new Epson 3800 (we are now traveling with both).

I’m up so Mac grabs my camera to snap a few of me on stage.

At lunch, we ate outside. Lovely day (mid-seventies) and I heard the sirloin sandwiches were great, I got stuck with turkey again (I never get out in time).

At lunch Jack gets into the game grabbing my camera to shoot me.

But I got him back…I wandered into his Track One session to “sneak up” on him.

Track One always has more people than Track Two.

In the afternoon, Mac Holbert covers fine art printing.

George Jardine was there from Adobe (left) and had demoed Lightroom Beta 5. On the right, Andrew gets excited when I tell him Greg Gorman sent me down a really nice bottle of wine for dinner.

The “wrap”. Another successful event. Right, a dealer loads up his stuff in a pickup truck. (A pickup truck?, well, ok I guess we were in Chandler).

Walking back from dinner (after Greg’s bottle of vino as well as a few additional bottles) I snap a shot of the last daylight and the moon over the palms.

For the last few years, a small exclusive group of people have been invited by the Pixel Mafia to attend a special dinner during PhotoPlus Expo (see the PSN Pixel Mafia story from 2005). Who is the Pixel Mafia you may ask? Well, if you have to ask, you really don’t want to know…The Rules of Omertá, ya know?

This year, the Pixel Mafia Dinner was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Jovia Restaurant (135 E 62nd Street near Lexington). The guests were comprised of the “Usual Suspects” as well as some new blood.

The Pixel Mafia dinner was timed to occur just after the Adobe press event (convenient how that happens, huh?). But since my wife, Rebecca (Becky to those who know her), and I were staying in Times Square, we had to hoof it since Broadway shows made getting a cab difficult. Along the way we spied an empty ped-cab and decided to hop on board for what turned out to be a really thrilling ride through midtown Manhatten.

We arrived at Le Cirque in one piece. For photos from that event, check out Martin Evening’s PhotoPlus Expo report.

After the Adobe event, we walked a few blocks to Jovia. But, along the way I shot Martin shooting the Beacon Court building on 58th street.

Jovia’s sign…

Jack Reznicki shows up and asks when the party will start (he figured we were just waiting for him).

First thing I noticed walking up to the second floor (we took over the entire 2nd floor front room) was a bottle of vino.

The two “white shirt boys”, Bryan Hughs (left) the new “baby Photoshop product manager” and Brandon.

Andrew Rodney, the Digital Dog, doesn’t like having his pic taken. Bad dog Andrew…

Karl Lang (left) with dual fisted wine. He set the 2nd glass down to pick up his camera to take some shots (far more than I took). Parker Plaisted from Microtech is looking on.

I do remember a lot of the dinner, but between the vino and the food and hanging with the crews, I simply didn’t raise the camera as often as my glass. So, all I’ve got is the shot getting into the cab back to the hotel (left) and a shot of JP’s wife Ardie (right) and Becky on the ride home.

Here’s my obligitory Times Square shot just outside our hotel.

Since I did more drinking than shooting, I’ve enlisted fellow mob members Karl Lang and Andrew Rodney to supply additional photos from the dinner. The following photos are all ©2006 by Karl Lang or Andrew Rodney.

We had almost 60 people in the main 2nd floor dining room of Jovia. We were SUPPOSED to have a full 60, but several people who R.S.V.P.’ed couldn’t attend. Several had good excuses, several did not and incurred the rath of the “Godfather”. You know who you were.

Greg Gorman (The Consiglieri) toasts Jamie and Seth who will be married this Saturday, November 11th on some remote island in the Carabean. Last year Martin Evening and Camilla Pascucci “eloped” while in New York during PhotoPlus Expo and were honored at last year’s Pixel Mafia dinner. So, it was fitting that Jamie and Seth treated this Pixel Mafia dinner as a wedding reception.

PPE Conference Sessions: (these sessions require a fee to attend)

Seth Resnick – Digital Workflow Live
Date/Time: Friday, Nov 3 09:00 AM – 11:00 AM Session ID: FA10
In this new presentation, Seth Resnick will demonstrate his entire workflow in live time. He will begin with RAW files and adjust them for white balance and tonal corrections. Then he will create custom metadata templates with full IPTC information and keywording. The files will be ranked, organized and renamed using methods that comply with all international standards. Finally, using scripting and advanced actions, the images will be processed in live time, according to a range of needs—the submission guidelines of a stock agency, the black-and-white needs of a client, a series of images for the Web and a series of high res files for archiving purposes. Handouts will be available for download after the session.

Seth Resnick – Demystifying Digital
Date/Time: Saturday, Nov 4 01:00 PM – 03:00 PM Session ID: SB10
Many photographers mistakenly assume that the switch to digital simply means changing equipment and using a digital camera instead of film. This lecture will focus on digital capture, file prep and delivery. The topics for discussion include: RAW vs. jpg, color space, white balance, understanding histograms, interpolation, digital exposure vs. film, digital problems and answers, sharpening, metadata, archiving and digital negative (DNG) format. Handouts will be available for download after the session.

Andrew Rodney Moderating – Iron Chef: RAW Processing
Speaker(s):
Andrew Rodney, Moderator
Greg Gorman
Jay Maisel
Kevin Raber
Eric Hyman
George Jardine
Date/Time: Thursday, Nov 2 09:00 AM – 12:00 PM Session ID: TA10
This session begins with a 30-minute overview of how RAW differs from rendered images and advantages and disadvantages to working with RAW files. Several leading RAW converters will demonstrate how they process a series of identical RAW files all the way to output on an Epson 4800 printer. Two leading photographers— a Canon shooter and a Nikon shooter—will supply a series of RAW files. A representative of each RAW converter manufacturer will have 15 minutes to process the images, with feedback from the photographers. See results in real-time and join in the critique.

Andrew Rodney – Color Management and Photoshop CS2
Date/Time: Friday, Nov 3 09:00 AM – 12:00 PM Session ID: FA9
How does Adobe Photoshop CS work with color images and color profiles? This session will explain how Photoshop can be easily configured to produce accurate previews of digital files and how to achieve accurate and predictable output. Learn about soft proofing, color gamut, which RGB Working Spaces to utilize (and why), and understand how Photoshop’s color engine operates for best results with virtually no color geek speak. Handouts will be provided.

Andrew Rodney – From Digital Capture to 4Color Output
Date/Time: Saturday, Nov 4 01:00 PM – 03:00 PM Session ID: SB8
This seminar looks at the workflow techniques best suited to handle images from professional digital cameras and prepare them for output to print. Explore whether you should capture data as RAW and if so, how you should handle color profiles and RAW conversions. Rodney will take an image from RAW capture to CMYK output ready for press, and will show you the tools and techniques required to produce the best image quality. Topics covered include: when and how to effectively sharpen images for maximum quality and flexibility, necessary steps to ensure the best CMYK conversions for your clients and best practices to achieve accurate color.

Jeff Schewe – Making the Perfect Print
Date/Time: Thursday, Nov 2 09:00 AM – 11:00 AM Session ID: TA8
Whether it involves understanding color management, image optimization or soft proofing, there are ways to perfect your images before the ink hits the paper. In this seminar print master Jeff Schewe guides you down the road to the perfect print.

Jeff Schewe – Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
Date/Time: Saturday, Nov 4 09:00 AM – 11:00 AM Session ID: SA10
Learn the ins and outs of Adobe Lightroom from someone who was involved in the development of Lightroom from the very beginning. Lightroom offers a brand new way of working with digital captures from import to print to export, and Jeff Schewe can help you understand the best way to deploy it in your digital workflow.
