Lightroom News Interview: David duChemin

In our ongoing series of interviews with Lightroom users, Lightroom News was delighted to have ‘Within The Frame’ author David duChemin take our questions as he ventured off on yet another trip.

Hi David, thanks for joining us on Lightroom News. Those that know you here are probably most familiar with your excellent book “Within The Frame”. To kick off, can you give us a little background to your photography and how it eventually lead to the book?

Thanks for having me! I think at heart I’m a communicator, so I approach photography as an act of expression. But it took me 20 years to get to that point, like I was learning a language and suddenly understood that that language could be used to tell the stories I was most passionate at telling. It lead to the book because I saw a vacuum in the teachings of photography about why we use photography as an art form and not just how we do so. And then this crazy “hey, what if I write a book?” thing kind of spiraled out of control and here we are.

Watermarking for Web with LR2/Mogrify

One feature sorely lacking in Lightroom is a good watermark on Export. Using the fabulous 3rd party plugin LR2/Mogrify from Timothy Armes solves this issue for a straight export, but unfortunately post process plugins are not available in the Web Module. So how can we do it?

Well for my recently launched music photography website Muso Foto, I wanted nice (i.e. not the normal Lightroom one) watermarks on my images. Nothing intrusive, but something that doesn’t take away from the image.

Here’s the steps I took:

Lightroom to GMail

It seems like a lot of the current Lightroom news is Plugin related, and this is no exception. Lightroom support for email is based on adding your mail program as a post process action normally. Seeing a gap in the market as such, Timothy Armes has created a plugin called LR2/Gmail, allowing GMail users to email directly from inside Lightroom.

It is of course dependent on your server having access to GMail’s server. It does include some nifty features like tracking who you emailed a photo to, and accessing your contacts from GMail. All in all a nifty little plugin. Read More
