Markdee: you might find the following information on my support page concerning the use of Hierarchical Keywords in Lightroom (http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/help/cvkc-lightroom.html#hierarchicalkeywords) to be of help.

The text file format that you import in or export out of Lightroom is the same as that used by Photo Mechanic and a few other applications. If you don't use the synonym or excluded category header options (the words in the {} and [] brackets), you can use the same file for an even wider variety of applications (Bridge, FotoStation, BreezeBrowser, Aperture, etc.).

There is a document within the Controlled Vocabulary Forum explaining how to modify the Text file format for Controlled Vocabularies used by Lightroom, Photo Mechanic and others.
http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/forum.html).

Hope that gives you a few options.

I haven't been using synonyms but tried it after your article for words to make sure I have plural and singular versions covered. However, I get a different output result, from what you described, for synonyms when choosing export as LR hierarchy or not:

1)
Do not export as LR hierarchy: Synonyms are exported, words in [] are not.

2)
Export as LR hierarchy: Synonyms are not exported, words in [] are exported.

This was checked in Bridge and Mac OSX's Info Panel - other programs may read the hierarchy version different but it seems clear that the hierarchy version doesn't have the synonyms - wish it did.

I have a particularly favorite text editor (software geek, I am) and have used this technique forever. I started with David Riecks Controlled vocabulary and use separate text files in the same CVKC format to keep my additions separate from that original source. I use other text files to keep sets in my own format.

I thought I was just an uber-geek. But it's a site easier than using the extreme awesome full power of Lightroom keyword editing. .

Good article!

Thought you might like to know I've created a reasonably large (and growing) set of keyword lists for Lightroom which are available from my blog.

So far they cover things such as:

1. Geography - a list of all countries broken down by continent (with US by state and UK by county)
2. Animals - I’m sure this won’t be complete but includes over 350 animals
3. Colours - Red or Crimson? A list of 42 of the more common colours
4. Natural Landforms - Beaches, canyons, forest and glaciers
5. Bodies of Water - Over 30 terms for that wet stuff
6. Buildings - Nearly 180 words for man-made structures

They're available for free from my blog:
