What’s with the phoney poll?

Source: CnetNews
Author: Walterny

In case you haven’t noticed, CnetNews ran a story this week asking which is better, Aperture or Lightroom? Photoshopnews.com pubished a link to this article and subsequently run a further story questioning whether this was a legitimate poll or not. See: CNET Aperture/Lightroom Poll Skewed? However, further doubts about the reliability of this poll have been raised by reader Walterny, who has made some interesting observations about the apparent static nature of the published poll percentages. Editor’s note: on Sunday afternoon this was showing Aperture 64.2%, Lightroom 35.8%, with 8002 votes cast. Here is what Walterny had to say:

I found myself a bit bored yesterday so was reading various web pages. My home page is Apples start page. One of the links is to a CNET “review” of an Apple photographic software product vs an Adobe equivalent product.

Geotagging within Lightroom

Geotag-lightroom-plugin is a Beta Geotagging plugin for Lightroom created by Jeff Barnes. It utilises a feature of the Export SDK, whereby you can create a menu item within Lightroom. The plugin reads GPX information and writes it to the file in Lightroom using Exiftool.
Features include:

  • Sync photo to GPS using picture of GPS display
  • Interpolate location between track points
  • Add geotags to original images or save to new location
  • While there are some issues, the plugin works “for the most part”. Installation instructions and download information can be got at the Plugin homepage.

    Lightroom-Blog Galleries

While I’m quick to post news about other 3rd party add ons to Lightroom, I tend to be a bit slower about my own, so just some quick links.

I’ve 2 new free galleries for Lightroom. Both are new versions of older galleries, with loads more polish!

The first is the Vertical Scroll Gallery, featuring a menu and a vertical scrolling gallery window.
The second is the Horizontal Scroll Gallery. Not surprisingly it features a menu and a horizontal scrolling gallery.
Other features of both galleries include photo height and width control and a photo border with selectable size and colour.

The second one was popular in the original XSLT from. It has way more features now and is quite customisable.

Using the inbuilt menus, it’s possible to build a website from both of these galleries by inserting the correct links in the Site Info Pane in the Right Panel of web.

Podcast #49 has been posted, with Gregory Heisler

Adobe Evangelist George Jardine has posted Podcast #49, with Gregory Heisler: “

Maybe you want to do a Brett Weston, and you don’t want anyone to open your files. Maybe you want your files to just die a peaceful death, and you want to pull the plug on them, and send them on to eternity. And what you want are these finished prints; they are the realization of your vision. And everything else was just a way to get there. Like you don’t actually want somebody, in a sense, reprinting from your negatives. You’re done. It’s fine. Even though with photography the temptation is that it’s always an open door, it’s fine to lock the door and throw away the key. That’s OK.’ – Gregory Heisler

In the grand scheme of human history, February 19th may not go down as a momentous occasion, but it’s recently come to light that at least in the world of digital imaging, today signifies a more important date than most anybody realized. And that folks, is the delicious irony.
