Export Plugin Innovation: Piglets

Regular Expressions Guru and Export Plugin Consultant Jeffrey Friedl has announced the creation of Piglet technology. A Piglet is a plugin that goes inside a plugin, a sub Plugin, if you will. Using the thought process of Plugin-Plugin –> Sub Plugin –> Plugin-ette –>Pluglette –> Piglet to get to a name, Jeffery explains “I think it’s cute, but you’ll be forgiven if you think it’s corny”.

The motivation for creation of such technology was based upon requiring further innovation for Jeffrey’s existing Export Plugins. In case you’ve missed them, Jeffrey has 4 very useful Export Plugins for exporting to Zenfolio, SmugMug, Flickr, and Picasa Web. These give picture upload to the sites, but Jeffrey wanted more. Enter Timothy Armes with the LR/Mogrify Plugin. This plugin features tools that perform tasks that a lot of people feel need to be in Lightroom, eg. Export Sharpening and decent Watermarking. The options this plugin provide would be a useful addition to any export plugin.

Jeffrey could’ve simply lifted code from Tim (with permission), but wanted to find a better solution. The result is ‘Piglets’. Working together, Jeffrey and Tim have created an archicture that allows the LR/Mogrify Plugin to be used inside other Plugins. As well as Jeffrey’s Plugins, Tim’s other Plugin LR/Transporter also supports this technology.
As a user of these plugins, I am keen to see this being implemented and kudos to both Jeffrey and Tim for the work on this project.

Jeffrey is also running a Piglet resource page. This resource provides a central list of plugins that can be used as Piglets.
