Snapshots came before Virtual Copies and I would agree that on the whole, Virtual Copies are more versatile. Especially since you can also do things like restrict the metadata on individual VCs. Snapshots however, allow you to create what I like to regard as 'internal' VCs, which can also allow you to work more tidily with the History panel. Save a snapshot and clear history. Carry on working, create a new snapshot etc. Although VCs have dominated my workflow and replaced previous usages of Snapshots, there may well be potential for Snapshots to play a key role for localised editing. I have no idea if this will feature in a future version of Lightroom, but it would be cool if you could paint in Lightroom from a saved snapshot state.

If that is you Matthew, Great work you are doing on the TheTurningGate.net website!

Good stuff, but I'm wondering how Snapshots stack up against Virtual Copies. Virtual Copies seem they would have a number of advantages over Snapshots, being that you can manipulate and view them in the Library module. Is there a reason to use Snapshots instead?
