At least, the tips described here work as described when using Windows Vista. If I try and edit the smart object I get the following error:

‘Could not edit original smart object because the disk is not available’

Not sure I can help with this one. It could be a corruption of some kind, but I am just guessing here.

Hi, not sure if anybody's come across this issue before but when I drag my LR-edited RAW file onto my CS3 icon it opens up in ACR as expected (I'm running a Mac). Holding down the shift key allows me to 'open object' but once the image is in CS3 I have problems.

The thumbnail in the layers palette is showing me the smart object curled page icon but the background to this is plain white. If I try and edit the smart object I get the following error:

'Could not edit original smart object because the disk is not available'

I'm running everything on a local machine so can't really make much sense of the error.

Any advice greatfully received

Hallo Martin,
I understand. I have both win os with LR 1,2 and PS CS3 with CameraRaw 4,2. These are my experiences:

Win XP Prof.: drag and drop from LR doesnot work; droplet alone (in PS) is working but if I drag a picture from LR I can do nothing except to give it to an other position or folder in Library modul. Outside the LR window I cannot drop the file.

Win Vista 64bit Ultimate: drag and drop from LR doesnot work and droplet alone is not working too :)). Batch function in PS is working properly.

So the result for us with win is now probably one clik more ("Show in Explorer") and from this to open it in CameraRaw and Photoshop. And in W XP from explorer also with a droplet.

Thank you for your work Martin!!

Tomas,

I can't guarantee for all OS systems, just those I am able to check with myself.

Check out the second part story in which I show how to override the display of the Camera Raw dialog as part of a batch action.

I'm sorry to write it but in W Vista (I have 64 bit Ultimate) this tip also doesn't work.

It would be nice to get it as a Xmas present from Adobe with option if you want or not to see CameraRaw modul and also with auto saving last changes before opening in CameraRaw. And it would be good if this will work also for jpeg, tiff and virtual copy.

I really like this work around. But there is typo or mistake. You need to save the Meta Data before moving files but you say to use "apple E" where in fact you need to type "apple S" for save. One other note is you seem to not be able to use this until your system/lightroom library is fully recognized. There can be no operation working.

I do several edits and put all of them into a new folder "Edit TIFF" or Edit JPG" So this eliminates the fat/extra files in two folders.

It used to be the case that you could not drag and drop using Windows, but as far as I know this is working now. At least, the tips described here work as described when using Windows Vista.

I don't think you mentioned it, but as far as I know, drag and drop from Lightroom to Photoshop (or anywhere outside of LR) does not work on Windows.
