Matt Kloskowski has posted an excellent video on using the new Catalog feature in Lightroom 1.1. The video covers exporting a Catalog on your laptop and importing this Catalog into your desktop catalog. He also shows how changes to images already in the Catalog are handled in the import process. The final part of the video covers creating new Catalogs and changing between existing Catalogs. For those interested in syncing between different machines and/or working with multiple Catalogs, this video is a good introduction to those tasks.
