Rename and Filename Templates

rn.jpg

Renaming in Lightroom has generated much discussion in the forums, prompting me to finish a video tutorial I had been planning for a while.

Here’s a brief introduction to renaming in Lightroom and creating your own custom filename templates.

Batch naming in Lightroom can be done at a few stages. On Import in the filename section of the Import Dialog, Using F2 in Library and on Export. In the video I show how to create a template to suit your naming workflow to use in these locations.

Hi, I have a problem with sequence number.

If I want to import photos from my camera that were taken in diferent days I get something like that. (my template is D70_YYYY_MM_DD_NNN where NNN is the sequence number)

    D70_2007_02_20_001
    D70_2007_02_20_002
    D70_2007_02_20_003
    D70_2007_02_20_004
    D70_2007_02_25_005
    D70_2007_02_25_006
    D70_2007_02_25_007

But I want something like that

    D70_2007_02_20_001
    D70_2007_02_20_002
    D70_2007_02_20_003
    D70_2007_02_20_004
    D70_2007_02_25_001

Unless you Import by date individually (ie one import per date), I can’t see a way to do it on import.
I do know there are requests in to have different things applied to different dates/folders on import, but this might not happen until V2.0 even (although it may happen in a dot release).
Personally I would import each date separately, so I could also apply different keywords and metadata to each day, as well as different renaming.

    Thanks for your recomendation.

I hope that improvements in rename photos appears in a minor version. (1.1)

  6. Freddif says:

Thanks for the tutorial. I am interested in learning how to rename and move files and folders. Any suggestions

  7. Sean McCormack says:

Just drag them in the folders pane to move them. As for renaming folders, just double click the name in the folders pane. It should become highlighted, just type the new name in directly.
I highly recommend Jeff and Michael’s tutorial on Luminous Landscape.com listed on the right here.
